What Does Your Garden Grow?

Snow still covers the ground here and it was about 5 degrees when hubby left for work this morning, but I’m itching to plant something! Last weekend, hubby plowed up the space where my garden will be. After a few more passes with the tiller, it should be good to go.

One great thing about moving to a new house with an un-landscaped yard is that I have a blank slate when it comes to planting, so I’ve been dreaming about what plants to plant since last summer. I bought books and read them during the winter, I browsed online seed catalogs…in short, I’m ready. Now if only the weather would cooperate!

Here’s some of what I plan to plant and why:

• Apple trees — hardy, fruit stores easily
• Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and currants — fruit is expensive in stores but freezes and cans well (plus, I can sell some if I have a really great harvest)
• Cantaloupe, pumpkin and watermelon — just for fun
• Lettuce and kale — fresh tastes better and it’s too expensive in stores
• Carrots — fresh tastes so much better
• Squash — stores easily for the baby’s food
• Cauliflower and broccoli — too expensive to buy and should freeze well
• Onions, garlic and potatoes — store easily in our makeshift cellar
• Sugar snap peas — I can eat these until my tummy’s sore but they’re so expensive to purchase even when I can find them
• Corn — it’s Kansas 🙂

I may pick up a few more seed packets here and there if something looks good, too. It’s about time to get the root veggies, lettuce and peas in the ground, so I’ll be planting at least a bit when the snow melts and the ground dries a bit. According to legend, my potatoes should already be in the ground. Keeping my fingers crossed that next week will be good planting weather!
